Next to the Communications Challenge, I haven’t come across that many books on Connection Planning/Communications Planning until I came across Space Race: An Inside View of the Future of Communications Planning.

Five years ago the world of agency communications turned upside down. Ogilvy introduced 360 degree thinking, Unilever formulated their ABC process, TBWA developed their Disruptive philosophy, and total communications planning was born. Now, total communications planning is being increasingly demanded by clients. The question is no longer where does the future lie, but how does an agency get there as quickly as possible? This book sets out to define the structure of tomorrow’s agencies by interviewing the leading lights of the industry today. Jim Taylor, himself an experienced practitioner of Total Communications Planning, identifies common issues and themes to offer a set of likely scenarios for The Agencies of the Future.

I highly recommend this book because Taylor has spent countless hours, days, months, and years thinking about the future of Communications Planning. Something that’s gaining traction, evident in the Naked/J&J win, and something that will continue to evolve in the future. Taylor goes over the history of Communication Planning and even makes his own predictions. Right now, this might be the “bible” everyone has been seeking!

one of the most prescient books on comm planning that takes the practice out of the bs rhetoric of previous books. a hard look at the industry as a whole, and taylor really digs in. I use it quite a bit to make distinction between comm planning (the “holy grail” for media planning and agencies as a whole) and connections (creative insights for touchpoint/brand experiences).

is it me or do most people use connections/comm planning synonymously? better yet.. should they? ;)
