Proof that Facebook is taking over the world: I recently
got a friend request from my mom.
The site founded by Mark Zuckerberg, was originally modeled
off of college “Face books” that were designed to
establish connections between its students. This modest
goal was satisfied by Facebook back in 2004 as the site
quickly expanded its networks from Harvard to just about
every university in America. The site which runs strictly
on advertising revenue (an estimated 100 million dollars in
2006) again broadened its base by opening its doors to the
world. It has never looked back.
Once thought to be a social networking site only for
college users, Facebook quickly proven that is much more.
Currently estimated as to having over 40 million active
users, Facebook continues to grow at about 3 percent weekly.
For the first time its member base is made up of more than
60 percent non college students. Its fastest growing
demographic is ages 25 and over. It is becoming the
ultimate social networking tool.
Facebook’s membership growth could be attributed to the
sites growing horizons. Facebook has expanded its
applications to mirror some of the other internets top
sites. Sites like Flickr and Photobucket once dominated the
internet for image postings. Now Facebook’s photo
application traffics more than double than all of the other
sites combined. It recently added a virtual marketplace,
the idea probably via Craigslist. It also now has video
upload capablity, watch out YouTube.
The list of applications for Facebook goes on, and it will
only get longer. Now anybody can develop a new application
for Facebook and upload it and have it available for all.
The site has truly become larger than life. It continues to
grow at unprecedented rates, its is the 6th most viewed site
on the internet, and according to Zuckerbeg “Google is
(its) sights.” Its just a matter of time before you’ll
receive a friend request from Grandma…
